PACE
There are many programs in the state designed to help troubled teens get back on the right track, before it's too late. But one in particular.. is gaining recognition.. And it's expanding. It's the PACE Center For Girls, Inc.
In Assignment: Education.. We take you to one of the newest PACE Centers.. in Pasco County.
--[Teacher says:] "Alright, we have too much.. Too much fat and cholesterol."--
On this day at the PACE Center in New Port Richey, this small group of 15-to-17-year-old girls is learning about nutrition. Nearby, another group of teens is involved in an elective reading class. Today.. Michael Jordan's book and its messages about achieving.
--[Teacher says:] "And one of the good philosophies is I'm going to win it. I'm going to conquer it.. And keeping that mentality with you."--
These are the kinds of messages these young ladies need to hear. Each of them is considered troubled, at-risk, and have had little success in public schools. They were recommended for the year 'round program by either their school or the juvenile justice system. Pasco County Commissioner Ann Hildebrand was the spearhead behind bringing a PACE Center to her county. She says the special school has one goal for each girl.
--[Ann Hildebrand says:] ".. Is to basically turn her life around and to give her the self-confidence and the self-assurance, uh, that there is another way to conduct your life and be a good member of society."--
Two of the girls we spoke to say the school is already making a difference for them.
--[Krysta Childers says:] "Yeah, I love the program cause you can work at your own pace. I mean the teachers can help you when you need help, you know what I'm saying? It's not like you have to wait 30 minutes to get a question answered."--
--[Melissa Wathen says:] "The teachers here.. they teach me more things that.. I learn more here than I have at school.
Which is what PACE is all about. Giving young ladies another chance.. before they runout of chances.
